Tom Stotts

I would describe my landscape paintings as atmospheric minimalism. I have elements of the landscape from nature (trees, structures, rivers, foregrounds, skies,) arranged in a design from “within” that employs techniques that result in a “clean design” and a soft, “dreamlike” painting. I like depth in a landscape and this type of soft, minimal style gets the look I love to create. My overall color palette is usually a muted one. This muted palette allows me to emphasize small areas of the piece that I want to glow, such as the horizon. If the subject matter calls for it, I will occasionally bring in bolder colors, but still usually lean the piece to a low light, evening or dawn feel. My compositions are asymmetrical. I use large sky, small foreground, or large foreground, small sky in my design.
